Demarest Garden Club collaborated with volunteers from the Garden Railroaders of Northern New Jersey (GRRNNJ), to install, landscape and run G-scale trains on solar-powered, publicly accessible, Ed’s Garden Railroad. The two-year project, begun in 2008 and dedicated on June 5, 2010, is the 33rd project by the club in borough-owned, club-run Davies Arboretum in Demarest, New Jersey.
Funded by the Lamp Family of Norwood, the project honors the memory of Edward Lamp, who was an active member of both organizations.
Ed’s Garden Railroad features a solar-power battery backup electrical system, a two-level, two-track, two-tunnel setup for running two G-scale trains at the same time, a hardscape of block and stone walls and angular stones brought in to create an Alpine topography, and a plantscape of miniature trees, thyme varieties, and other low growing plants. Two locomotives, each pulling four cars, were included in the donation and two monthly runs for public viewing and participation (March 15-October 15) began in 2010.
